Experienced Psychiatrist Pathway

The International Society for Sports Psychiatry offers an additional pathway for experienced sports psychiatrists to obtain a “Certificate of Additional Training in Sports Psychiatry.” This augments its certificate pathway for medical students, psychiatry residents/fellows, and psychiatrists.

 

Eligibility Requirements

Education/Certification/Licensure

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine with a doctorate of medicine (M.D.) or osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree or its international equivalent. Successful completion of training in an accredited psychiatry residency program. American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) board certification in general psychiatry and/or an ABPN-approved subspecialty of psychiatry, or the equivalent if practicing in another country. Current licensure to practice medicine in at least one state in the United States, or the equivalent in another country.

Professional Experience

Ten years or more of extensive clinical experience with at least 20% of full time (i.e., one workday per week) on average dedicated to the care of athletes, coaches, and/or teams. Less than ten years of total experience is acceptable as long as the total sports experience adds up to or exceeds two full years (i.e., 25% time over 8 years, 33% time over six years, 50% time over 4 years, etc.).

Knowledge of the Field

This is evidenced by extensive reading of sports psychiatry or performance psychology books or published articles and/or attendance at or participation in sports psychiatry seminars, workshops, courses, and/or society meetings.

Ethics

Must not have lost medical licensure or health systems credentialing due to professional misconduct.

Mentoring Program

The ISSP has now established a mentoring program available to our active members, through which psychiatrists or trainees with specific interests in sports psychiatry can be connected with mentors–ideally in geographic proximity–who have at least 10 years of experience in the field.
